She became ?America?s toughest trainer? after helping contestants shred a ton of weight on the hit TV show ?Biggest Loser.? and she makes no excuses for her ?tough love? attitude.
Whether it is the countless contestants or you at home, Jillian Michaels wants you to live your best life. Having grown up overweight herself, she has learned what it takes to get results. If you have tried one of her many hardcore workout DVDs or read any one her books, one thing is for sure, she gets results.
Last month, Michaels released her seventh diet book ? that she actually never thought she would write ? ?Slim for Life.? According to Michaels, ?Slim for Life? is everything she has learned over more than 20 years as a health and wellness expert and created a simpler approach to helping people slim down for good.
?There is so much conflicting information out there that it is easy to feel confused and overwhelmed when it comes to losing weight and keeping it off,? she says. ?In the book, I share simple strategies and tips for eating, exercising, shopping and living with no gimmicks. I break through all the myths and misconceptions to share information that people can really use and customize to their daily lives.
?It really is the best of what works to help give everyone the body, health and life that we all want and deserve in the easiest most cost effective way possible.?
Q: What is some of that bad advice you can?t believe people will follow?
A: There are so many. A couple big ones:
MYTH: High-protein
low-carbohydrate diets are a healthy way to lose weight. FACT: Complex carbs are a necessary source of essential vitamins and minerals that the body needs. Fat comes from too many calories, not too many carbs.
MYTH: Eating small, frequent meals boosts Your metabolism. FACT: It is based on the theory that if you keep adding small amounts of food to your fire (that fire being your metabolism) you?ll keep it going strong and burn more calories overall. The OPPOSITE is true. If you keep adding food to the fire, you?ll never dig into your fat stores.
The goal is actually to eat every four hours. In the book I explain my ?Four-by-Four? rule. Eat four times a day, every four hours. This means one substantive, healthy snack between lunch and dinner. This will help stabilize your blood sugar, optimize insulin production and manage hunger ? all of which are critical to weight loss and staying slim.
Q: What are some of the areas we slip up on and need to be more mindful of?
A: What we eat. Not just the number of calories ? which can still be an issue as it is so easy to eat more calories than we realize ? but things like skipping meals, eating processed foods filled with chemicals, and grazing all day are all common mistakes that can really get things off track very quickly. Another big one is lack of sleep. So many of us don?t get enough sleep (7 to 8 hours) and this does play a critical role in the effort to lose weight.
Q: I like how flexible ?Slim for Life? is. A lot of health books can be very regimented and unrealistic. You have created eight chapters that are like a challenge with points awarded to your slim suggestions. The higher the points you attain the faster the results. Can you explain how this all works?
A: The point system is an important part of making ?Slim for Life? customizable to the individual, so the plan they choose lasts forever. I know that it isn?t realistic for people to do every single thing in the book every minute of every day. The points system is essentially a ?hierarchy of slim? that specifically tells you which tips and pieces will give you the most bang for your weigh-loss buck.
3?s are the most powerful and important, 2?s are solid and useful but not utterly essential and 1?s are a nice add on. All will help you get slim, so you you like one more than another, have at it. The whole point of ?Slim for life? is to create a structure that works for you.
Q: We are a world of quick fixes, and while we know there aren?t any, do you feel that weight training and circuit training can get us fit more quickly than long bouts of cardio?
A: You can see great results fast when you work out smart and hard. I definitely understand how tough it can be to find the time for a workout. I don?t have a lot of time for mine, but I make sure they are very effective and work out HARD when I hit the gym.
Working multiple muscle groups at the same time and doing high-intensity interval training circuits to really blast the heart rate are both key in seeing great results in less time.
Q: While diet and exercise are the more important part of a healthy lifestyle, you also touch upon other things in our lives that can be roadblocks preventing us from reaching full potential such as cleaning and hygiene products, traveling and even the way we dress.
A: As I mentioned above, sleep is really crucial. And so many of us neglect it all the time. The fact is, sleep plays a huge role in our hormones, our metabolism, our energy levels and more. It is crucial that we get sleep.
Another thing we can do is work to be as natural as possible. Not just in the food we eat, but in the products that we use. Chemicals really have no place in or on our bodies and can wreak havoc on our metabolism. Going natural as much as possible can make a big difference.
Q: I could totally visualize you spraying Heidi?s cookies with dry shampoo in your section called ?Wreck Havoc.? I?ve actually seen some reality TV people do this. How do we do this and not just reach for something else?
A: The key is too control your environment. Will power is like a muscle: The more you use it the more fatigued it gets. Remove temptation whenever and wherever possible. So if you destroy the cookies, make sure you don?t have cake in the fridge.
Q: Eating at night has always been a big no-no. You say we can, but just no carbs three hours before bed. What would be Jillian approved evening meals and snacks?
A: I really don?t snack before bed. I?m pretty good at adhering to the 4-by-4 rule, but if I did I might have veggie sticks and hummus. A low-fat cheese stick with a couple slices of turkey. A deviled egg. Some turkey or beef jerky and so on.
Q: On March 5, you will release another killer DVD, Hard Body. How does this DVD fit in with the book?s advice, and what else should we do the other five days? (see below for my review of the DVD)
A: My DVDs essentially take all my fitness advice and make it failproof for you. There is no thinking required on the part of the consumer. They simply pop in the DVD and I provide all the knowledge. They simply need to show up!
Q: Now that you have added two little ones to your already busy life, how has your diet and exercise regimen changed to fit it all in? Moms never seem to find the time for themselves to work out and often grab-n-go snacks in their free time. What are some of your top tips for fitting it all in and taking care of yourself?
A: It?s true. With two small children at home, I have to work my workouts into the schedule in any way I can. Sometimes this means hitting the gym while my mom watches the kids. Sometimes this means getting on the treadmill or doing a DVD workout after the kids have gone to sleep.
I also do everything I can to be active WITH my kids. I take the baby for a hike in the Bjorn. Or I take my toddler in a sidecar for a bike ride. I do all I can to both keep myself fit and set a good example for my kids, creating healthy habits early.
When it comes to food, I make sure to have healthy alternatives on hand, so they are easy and readily available. Raw almonds, non-fat greek yogurt, organic string cheese, even Popchips when I?m feeling like a little treat. The key is to having healthy choices at the ready on those busy days.
Q: Finish this sentence: ??Slim for Life? is not another diet book, it?s a ??
A: way of life that will make you happier and healthier ? permanently.

WORKOUT DVD REVIEW:
Title: Jillian Michaels Hard Body
The skinny: This 45-minute workout consists of two quick paced interval-style workouts. There are seven segments that you repeat twice. The moves are hardcore exercises that you have come to expect from Michaels, but the key to getting the Hard Body the title suggests is how she has taken her traditional moves and intensified them by moving quickly and adding weights to most all of the cardio moves. Michaels describes the moves before she performs them so you won?t fall behind or be confused. As you?ve read in her interview, these quick intervals shred fat fast. The DVD is for all levels with a modification offered for every move, but if you are truly going to get that Hard Body you will need to kick it up a notch and be sure to watch what you eat.

With a number of other countries already in line to get their hands on Mozilla's Firefox OS, it's pretty clear that the company doesn't have the States at the top of its list of priorities. While attending its press conference at MWC today, however, we just had to ask: when will we be getting a turn at the mobile operating system? CEO Gary Kovacs assured us that the US is indeed on the list (albeit a bit further down), and his company has both plans and partners lined up for what looks to be a 2014 release time frame for the low cost operating system.

I updated CM10 on my AT&T Galaxy S3 to the 4.2.1 version from the 4.1.1 version and it worked fine except I lost all my contacts, so then I found out that I needed to flash Gapps, which I did but then as soon as I booted the phone it wouldn't load and kept telling me all the Gapps stuff has stopped working so then I made it to the settings screen and then reboot into recovery and reflashed the CM10 nightly and now the phone won't boot past the rotating CyanogenMod logo and recovery won't work and nor will download mode. I have no idea what to do and I am going nuts as I need the phone tomorrow. PLEASE HELP.

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) ? Newly published U.S. documents indicate that Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet sought to use military force to annul the referendum portrayed in the Oscar-nominated film "NO" that ended his brutal regime. The plan was rejected by his fellow generals, the papers say.
The formerly top-secret documents posted by the independent U.S. National Security Archive on Friday also show U.S. officials warning Chilean leaders against violence if Pinochet tried to use force to stay in power.
Pinochet "planned to do whatever was necessary to stay in power" just a day before the Oct. 5, 1988, referendum, according to a Defense Intelligence Agency document based on information from a Chilean air force officer.
"Pinochet reportedly told advisors: 'I'm not leaving, no matter what,'" the document said.
The documents also show that U.S. officials and agencies backed the anti-Pinochet campaign, even though the U.S. government had worked to undermine the socialist administration of President Salvador Allende that Pinochet overthrew in a 1973 coup and initially supported the new regime.
The papers portray Pinochet as furious after the vote results.
In a last attempt to retain power, the strongman who once compared himself to the greatest Roman emperors asked the members of the military junta to meet in his office in the presidential palace at 1:00 AM," says a report by the Defense Department titled: "Chile: plebiscite goes forward as Pinochet apparently loses."
A CIA source at the meeting describes Pinochet as being "nearly apoplectic" about the results.
"Pinochet was prepared on the night of 5 Oct to overthrow the results of the plebiscite," an informant said in a report by the State Department titled: "Chilean junta meeting the night of plebiscite."
Pinochet had a document prepared for other generals to sign and "spoke of using the extraordinary powers to have the armed forces seize the capital," says one of the reports by the Defense Department.
But even his closest allies said no. The air force commander, Gen. Fernando Matthei, "told Pinochet he would under no circumstances agree to such a thing ... Pinochet then turned to the others and made the same request and was turned down."
Losing all backing to overthrow the plebiscite, Pinochet accepted his defeat.
The lead-up to that decision is depicted in "NO," which is up for an Academy Award as best-foreign language film on Sunday. The Chilean film is based on the publicity campaign that helped oust Pinochet and return Chile to democracy.
The general ruled Chile from 1973 to 1990. He died under house arrest, without ever being tried, despite charges of illegal enrichment and human rights violations.
"We negotiated with him because we were never able to judge him and Pinochet died a free man and a millionaire," said Pablo Larrain, director of "NO," in an interview last month with The Associated Press.
The film's July premiere in Santiago unsettled many audiences because Chile remains deeply divided over Pinochet's regime.
He shut down Congress, outlawed political parties and forced thousands of dissidents into exile, while his police tortured and killed thousands more.
But loyalists saw him as a fatherly figure who oversaw Chile's growth into economic prosperity and kept it from becoming a failed socialist state.
"Given the entrenched and violent nature of Pinochet's dictatorship, the No Campaign's victory is all the more dramatic," said Peter Kornbluh, author of "The Pinochet File: A Declassified Dossier on Atrocity and Accountability."
Forty years after the coup, Kornbluh said, "It is not only important to remember how he took power, but was forced to relinquish it."

According to sociologists, people make linguistic masks as ways to refer to death without using the word itself. Instead of dead, we use the terms, for example "gone," "passed away," "no longer with us," or "at peace now." This perhaps helps in internalizing the sorrow and making the death more humane.
Blauner suggests that before industrialization, social and economic reasons made the lifespan of people short. It was common for the family to care of the sick at home, and the sick died at home. It was common for most children seeing a sibling or parent die or vice versa.
The 19th century with the Industrialization and subsequent modernization changed this aspect. As secondary groups came to dominate society, the process of dying was placed in the hands of professionals in hospitals. Dying now started taking place behind closed doors managed by strangers.
According to Cerulo and Ruane not only did new technologies remove the dying from our presence, but they also created technological life-form of existence that lies between life and death. The "brain dead" in hospitals through technology keeps the body alive. This muddles the boundary between life and death, which used to seem so certain.
Psychologist Elisabeth Kler-Ross studied how people cope during the living-dying interval, that period between discovering they are going to die soon and death itself. After interviewing people who had been informed that they had an incurable disease, she concluded that people who come face to face with their own death go through five stages:
1. Denial: At first, people cannot believe that they are going to die. They avoid the topic of death and situations that remind them of it.
2. Anger: After a while, they acknowledge that they are going to die, but they view their death as unjust.
3. Negotiation: The individual tries to get around death by making a bargain with God, with fate, or even with the disease itself.
4. Depression: During this stage, people become resigned to their death, but they grieve because their life is about to end, and they have no power to change the course of events.
5. Acceptance: In this final stage, people come to terms with their impending death. They also express regret at not having done certain things when they had the chance.
Sociologically, death is a process, not just an event. People who expect to die soon face a reality quite different from the one experienced by those of us who expect to be alive years from now. Their impending death powerfully affects their thinking and behavior.
Today, we take it for granted that most people will see old age. Due to advances in medical technology and better public health practices, most deaths usually occur after age 65. People want to die with dignity, in the comforting presence of friends and relatives. There people experience what sociologists call institutional death surrounded by strangers in formal garb, in sterile rooms filled with machines, in an organization that puts its routines ahead of patients' needs.
Hospices emerged as a way to reduce the emotional and physical burden of dying and to lower the costs of death. Hospice care is built around the idea that the people who are dying and their families should control the process of dying. The term hospice originally referred to a place, but now it generally refers to home care. Hospice care is dedicated to providing dignity in death and making people comfortable during the living-dying interval.
People experience different kind of emotions after the death of a loved one. Along with grief and loneliness, they may feel guilt, anger, or even relief .The period of mourning allows the family members to come to terms with the death. They also reorganize their family system to deal with the absence of the person who was so important to it.
When death is expected, family members find it less stressful as they have begun to cope with the coming death by managing a series of smaller losses, including the person's inability to fulfill his or her usual roles or to do specific tasks. In contrast, unexpected deaths like accidents, suicides, and murders bring greater emotional shock. The family members have had no time to get used to the idea that the individual is going to die.

KIRKUK, Iraq (Reuters) - Masked gunmen wearing Iraqi army uniforms shot dead seven members of a government-backed militia on Friday in a northern town, in an apparent attempt to provoke unrest against Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki.
No group claimed responsibility, but Sunni insurgents have increased their attacks over the past two months, a year after U.S. troops pulled out of the country, where Shi'ite, Sunni and ethnic Kurdish factions still struggle over how to share power.
Riding motorbikes, the gunmen dragged "Sahwa" fighters from their beds in a caravan and killed seven of them, seriously wounding an eighth near the town of Tuz Khurmato, 170 km (105 miles) north of Baghdad.
"The seven dead bodies were in the same place. Each had a deadly shot to the head, but the eighth one had several shots in the back," said a policeman at the scene who declined to be named.
The Sahwa or "Sons of Iraq" are former Sunni insurgents who rebelled against al Qaeda in the Sunni heartland province of Anbar at the height of the Iraq war and helped American troops turn the tide of the conflict.
Al Qaeda's affiliate, Islamic State of Iraq, has often targeted Sahwa, pledging to take back ground lost to American and U.S. forces.
The prime minister has been struggling to quell mass protests by Sunni Muslims, mainly in Anbar, against what they see as the marginalization of their sect since the fall of Saddam Hussein and the rise of Iraq's Shi'ite majority through the ballot box.
The attack was at least the second of its kind so far this month. Earlier in February a suicide bomber targeting Sahwa fighters collecting their salaries killed at least 22 people.
While violence has fallen from the height of the sectarian slaughter that killed tens of thousands in 2006-2007, insurgents have carried out at least one major attack a month since U.S. forces left in December 2011. Bombings and killings still happen daily, often aimed at Shi'ite areas and local security forces.
Sunni unrest and renewed violence are compounding fears the war in neighboring Syria - where Sunni rebels are battling President Bashar al-Assad, an ally of Shi'ite Iran - could undermine Iraq's own delicate sectarian and ethnic balance.
Tuz Khurmato, where Friday's shootings took place, is located in the "disputed areas" - a thick band of territory over which both the Iraqi central government and the autonomous Kurdish region in the north claim jurisdiction.

HEBER SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) ? Mindy McCready, who hit the top of the country charts before personal problems sidetracked her career, died Sunday in Arkansas in an apparent suicide. She was 37.
The Cleburne County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that McCready was found dead at a residence in Heber Springs from what appears to be a single, self-inflicted gunshot to the head. An autopsy is pending.
It wasn't the first suicide attempt for the troubled singer, whose list of problems only continued to grow in 2013.
McCready entered court-ordered rehab earlier this month after her father told a judge she was no longer taking care of herself or her children and was abusing drugs and alcohol. Her sons were put in foster care at the time, but it's not clear where Zander and Zayne were at the time of McCready's death.
McCready's longtime boyfriend David Wilson, the father of her younger son, died last month in Arkansas. Authorities found his body on the same porch where they discovered McCready's on Sunday, and his death also was investigated as a suicide.
The front porch light remained on Sunday night at McCready's home in the wooded lakefront community filled with large homes. Yellow crime-scene tape blocked off the front of the house, and a deputy sat watch over the property, referring questions to the sheriff. A pickup truck remained in the driveway.
Wilson's passing struck McCready hard. She issued a statement last month lamenting his death. She called him her soul mate and a caregiver to her sons in an interview with NBC's "Today." She said she'd never gone through anything as painful as his death.
"I just keep telling myself that the more suffering that I go through, the greater character I'll have," she said, according to a transcript of the interview.
News of McCready's death spread quickly Sunday night on Twitter, with major country stars paying their respects to the onetime Nashville darling.
"Too much tragedy to overcome. R.I.P Mindy McCready," wrote Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chicks.
And Jason Aldean added: "Just heard about Mindy McCready. My thoughts and prayers are with her 2 boys and her family."
Melinda Gayle McCready arrived in Nashville in 1994 still in her teens with tapes of her karaoke vocals and earned a recording contract with BNA Records.
In 1996, her "Guys Do It All the Time" hit No. 1 and its dig at male chauvinism endeared her to females. Her other hits included "Ten Thousand Angels," also in 1996, and her album by that title sold 2 million copies.
She spent the next 15 years chasing another hit as personal problems began plaguing her. Her problems included a custody battle with her mother over one of her sons, an overdose and discord in her love life.
McCready took her older son, Zander, from her mother and the boy's legal guardian, Gayle Inge, in late 2011. She fled to Arkansas without permission over what she called child abuse fears. Authorities eventually found McCready hiding in a residence without permission and took the boy into custody.
She and Wilson had a son, Zayne, in April 2012. The older son's father is McCready's former boyfriend Billy McKnight.
In May 2010, she was hospitalized briefly after police responded to an overdose call at a home in North Fort Myers, Fla., owned by her mother. This followed a stint on "Celebrity Rehab With Dr. Drew," where she declared herself to be clean from drugs. She is the fifth celebrity appearing on that show to have died.
But her troubles began earlier. In 2004, she was charged with obtaining the painkiller OxyContin fraudulently at a pharmacy. She pleaded guilty and was placed on three years' probation.
She violated the probation with a drunken driving arrest in May 2005. A few days after that arrest, she was beaten and her boyfriend at the time was charged with attempted criminal homicide. Then she attempted suicide in July 2005, overdosed in September 2005 and slit her wrists in December 2008.
Also that year, McCready was charged in Arizona with hindering prosecution and unlawful use of transportation. Those charges stemmed from an alleged attempt in June 2005 to purchase two high performance boats, but she claimed she was trying to stop a con man.
In July 2007, she was arrested in her hometown of Fort Myers, Fla., on misdemeanor charges of scratching her mother on the face during a scuffle and resisting sheriff's deputies.
She made headlines again in April 2008 when she claimed a longtime relationship with baseball great Roger Clemens. Published reports at the time said she met the pitcher at a Florida karaoke bar when she was 15 and he was 28 and married.
In June 2008, McCready was arrested and charged with violating her probation by falsifying her community service records relating to the 2004 drug charge. A month later, she entered an extended care facility for undisclosed treatment, and followed that with a 60-day jail sentence in the Williamson County jail.
McCready found some peace after her appearance on "Celebrity Rehab" and told The Associated Press in early 2010 she hoped to get her career restarted, write a book about her experiences and begin production on a reality show. She felt she'd finally gained some control over her life.
"It is a giant whirlwind of chaos all the time," she said. "I call my life a beautiful mess and organized chaos. It's just always been like that. My entire life things have been attracted to me and vice versa that turn into chaotic nightmares or I create the chaos myself. I think that's really the life of a celebrity, of a big, huge, giant personality."

Asserting that "the American people" are on his side, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told me during an exclusive interview for "This Week" that any that deal reached between Republicans and Democrats to avoid the looming sequester must - "without any question" - include revenue.
"The American people are on our side. The American people don't believe in these austere things. We believe that the rich should contribute. We believe we should fill those tax loopholes - get rid of them, I should say. And that's where we need to go," Reid said. "And I've got a pretty good fan base for that: the American people. Republicans, Democrats, and Independents."
Reid confirmed his position on revenue would apply to any deal put into place to avert a government shutdown or lift the debt ceiling as well. This puts him directly at odds with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky, who said earlier this month on "This Week" that the "tax issue is finished,"But Reid - invoking the GOP's 2012 presidential candidate Mitt Romney - suggested a deal could include such things as the elimination of oil and gas subsidies, or what he called "low hanging fruit." The Nevada senator also pushed back when I asked if he was sidelined during the so called "fiscal cliff" negotiations, telling me he played the "bad cop" during that period.
I also asked Sen. Reid about comprehensive immigration reform, which has moved to the front of the president's legislative agenda for his second term. Reid expressed confidence that legislation would pass the Senate, adding that it would be a "bad day" for Republicans and America if it did not. When I asked if certain parts of the legislation - such as the definition of border security or how gays are treated under the bill - could mean Republicans might not want to sign on, Reid called them "excuses."
"It's certainly gonna pass the Senate. And it would be a bad day for our country and a bad day for the Republican Party if they continue to [stand] in the way of this," he said. "If they're looking for an excuse not to support this legislation, this is another one. But the American people are past excuses. They want this legislation passed."
On legislation aimed at curbing gun violence following the murder of 20 children in Newtown, Conn. In December. Reid, who told me he has "lots of guns" that he keeps for "sentimental reasons," said he wants to "get something done on guns" and expressed support for universal background checks. He said he'd consider other proposals such as limiting gun magazine capacity and said he'd "take a look" at the ban on assault weapons, which Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., strongly supports. Reid added that the influential NRA would not single-handedly prevent action to prevent gun violence.
"I've been supported by the NRA on occasion. I know Wayne LaPierre, he's always been extremely pleasant to me. We have a good relationship. So, I am not here to demean the organization," he said. "Just because they resist it doesn't mean we can't do things. I mean- we have a lotta special interest groups that come and complain about things?we'll listen to them and make the right decision.
Lastly, Reid stood by Sen. Bob Menendez when I asked him about recent allegations against the New Jersey senator involving a political donor. Reid said he was comfortable with Menendez serving as chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee while he was being investigated.
"He was a leader in the House. He's been a leader in the Senate. He's chairman of that committee. He'll do a wonderful job. And he's also an integral part of what we do with immigration reform. So, I have the utmost confidence in him," he said. "I have confidence he did nothing wrong. But that's what investigations are all about."

I have conflicting feelings about this issue. If she was barred because she announced her retirement, I think that's ridiculous. The Ravens' season isn't over, so it shouldn't be an issue. As far as the potential weight gain, I still think it's stupid, but she is in an area where appearance is very important. It sends a bad message to females in general, but I vaguely remember some sort of similar specification about weight/appearance with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders reality show. I still don't think it's right (I mean, 1.6 lbs? Come on!), but I wouldn't be surprised if it was in the fine print of their contract.
