New Initiatives in the Cause of Superfast Broadband

Broadband availability in the United Kingdom is admittedly not adequate as it should be, according to independent agencies. But BT, the premier internet service provider claims that UK is ahead of other nations in the matter of development of Fibre Optic cable deployment. They are sure that the 40 Mbps fibre broadband will be made available to almost 90 percent homes and business enterprises in all regions of the country. The agency has undertaken the task of providing super fast, reliable broadband services with accent on rural and remote places where the services available are not satisfactory. Several local exchanges will be upgraded in the next couple of years according to recent reports. Expectations are high that situation will improve considerably by the year 2015. About 60 percent of UK homes will be provided with faster broadband services.

The Government is aware of criticisms about the slow process of development in this field. In 2010 government has pumped about 830 million pounds in broadband development in an earnest endeavour to extend faster services to rural areas which are adversely affected by deficiencies. Government is convinced that there should be uniformity in the quality of service rendered in different parts of the country irrespective of urban or rural areas. 50 Million pounds Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) fund is targeting rural regions of the country. This newly constituted agency will help the local authorities to develop fibre broadband in remote areas. Such universal connectivity is essential for the development of rural areas which are allegedly neglected in the past.

The BT, which is in the broadband market service since 2000 is involved in the sale of wholesale bandwidth to several internet service providers. Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) is being adopted by the service providers who are free to install their equipments to render services to the internet users. They make use of BT infrastructures for the purpose. Despite deficiencies it is to be admitted that the situation is progressively improving. There are consumers who are able to receive broadband at 24 Mbps speeds. The quality of service is comparatively better in urban areas. Problems often occur in rural regions of the country.

With the current initiatives it is expected that the country will have superior quality services in the broadband segment. The massive investments deployed now will be fruitful in a couple of years. There are apprehensions that the optic fibre broadband supplies like FTTC and FTTP will be expensive. But as in the case of all modern technological products, the prices of broadband will also decline in the course of time. Market forces have always played positive roles in the equitable and economic distribution of products and services. It is obvious that broadband also will tend to become affordable in the coming years.

The United Kingdom has very compelling reasons to develop advanced technologies to provide super fast broadband. The country cannot afford to loose its eminence in the region as an industrial and commercial power in the present global scenario.
