2012 Champions League T20: Sehwag declared fit for KKR clash ? Cricket News Update
Swashbuckling Indian opener Virender Sehwag, who plays for Delhi Daredevils, on Thursday cleared the final fitness Test and will now play in his side?s opening Champions League T20 fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), at Centurion on Saturday.
The hard-hitting batsman sustained a ligament strain on his left ankle during the recently concluded World T20 Championship in Sri Lanka, and was a doubtful starter for Saturday?s Champions League opener. But he underwent a fitness test in Johannesburg on Thursday, and was declared fit to play in the esteemed league from the start.
"Virender Sehwag today appeared for a fitness test which was conducted by Kirk Russell. He cleared the test and was declared fit to play in the tournament from the start," a?Delhi Daredevils?official told media reporters today.
It is pertinent to mention here, that last month, Sehwag relinquished Daredevils? captaincy in favour of Sri Lanka?s Mahela Jayawardene. The Delhi dasher, who is experiencing an extended lean patch, had requested the team management to relive him of captaincy for the Champions League T20, as he wanted to bat freely.
The 33-year-old top-order batsman also played a pre-tournament warm-up match against Australia?s Twenty20 champions Sydney Sixers on Thursday. The out-of-form Indian opener once again failed to prove a point as he was bowled out for nought by pacer Josh Hazlewood.
The IPL side, which was without the likes of skipper Mahela Jayawardene and belligerent opener David Warner, could manage a paltry 107 against the Big Bash champions. The Sri Lankan batsman had an appointment with the dentist, while the Australian opener was rested to manage workload.
Main tournament of the CLT20 gets underway in South Africa on Saturday, October 13, and will run until October 28. Total ten teams, including two qualifiers, will compete in the league. Daredevils have been drawn in Group A along with Kolkata Knight Riders, Titans, Perth Scorchers and the qualifier from Pool 2 (Yorkshire).
Group B comprises defending champions Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings,? Highveld Lions, Sydney Sixers and the qualifier team from Pool 1 (Auckland?Aces).
Daredevils will play their tournament opener against IPL champions KKR, on Saturday.
