Divided dolphin societies unite

A unique social division among a population of bottlenose dolphins in Australia's Moreton Bay has ended, according to a new study.

The dolphins lived as two distinct groups that rarely interacted, one of which foraged on trawler bycatch.

But scientists think that a ban on fishing boats from key areas has brought the two groups together.

They believe these socially flexible mammals have united to hunt for new food sources.

Dolphin see, dolphin do?

Bottlenose dolphins have large brains and quickly learn new behaviours. Using a wide range of sounds to communicate with other members of the group, or "pod", they have been observed showing remarkable individual and social intelligence:

• One for the team: watch how a single dolphin peels off from the pod to shepherd the mullet into the open mouths of the group
• Bubble trouble: initially cautious of the new shapes created by the bubble machine, you can see how quickly the inquisitive dolphins turn this experiment into a game
• Mirror, mirror on the wall: from the reaction of these dolphins to their own reflection, scientists believe the animals have a developed sense of self
• Thinking out cloud: see how these dolphins off the Florida coast have developed a unique hunting strategy for the shallows off the Florida coast

The Moreton Bay dolphins were thought to be the only recorded example of a single population that consisted of groups not associating with each other.

The split was dubbed "the parting of the pods".

But since the study that discovered the rift, trawlers have been banned from designated areas of the bay leading to a 50% reduction in the fishing effort.

A key area of the bay to the south, where the social split was first observed by a previous study, has been protected.

The changes gave scientists a unique opportunity to observe the adaptability of dolphin society.

The "trawler" dolphins from Moreton Bay had previously fed on the bycatch from boats while the "non-trawlers" found other sources of food.

"There's never been really any experiments looking at social structure... where you can compare what it was like before and what it is like now," said Dr Ina Ansmann, a marine vertebrate ecologist at the University of Queensland and the study's lead author.

Analysing how the population interacted before and after trawling meant the team could assess how the dolphins' social network had changed.

"The dolphins had basically re-arranged their whole social system after trawling disappeared so they're now actually interacting again," Dr Ansmann told BBC Nature.

The scientists identified individual dolphins by the marks on their dorsal fin and recorded which animals were associating with which.

"Each dolphin has small injuries like nicks and notches, cuts and things like that on the fin so they all have a very unique looking dorsal fin."

This technique meant that Dr Ansmann could observe changes in behaviour, in some cases down to the individual dolphins which had been studied in the 1990s to reveal the original division.

"Presumably they're sharing information, co-operating and things like that."

Dolphins operate in what is called a fission-fusion society, forming groups and then splitting up to form different groups.

Through complex communication and social intelligence, bottlenose dolphins often work as a team when hunting for food and Dr Ansmann believes this may be what lies behind the unification.

"When relying on natural food sources I guess it's more important for them to interact with others, or to learn from others, or to co-operate with others to get to these food sources," she said.

The results suggest that a flexible social structure may be an important factor in how dolphins exploit a wide range of resources in the marine environment.

'Birthday party' turns into wedding ceremony

Guests at a birthday party were left speechless when they found themselves at a ?guerilla? wedding.

Matt and Laura Beresford decided to spring a surprise on the 130 family and friends they invited to their joint 30th birthday bash ? by getting married at the same time.

Guests were ushered into another room? while the birthday party was getting into full swing,? Matt and Laura sneaked off to get changed into their wedding outfits in the golf club changing rooms.

Only their parents, best man bridesmaid and staff at the venue knew about the wedding in advance. Staff erected a partition inside the room so the ceremony could be kept secret until the last minute.

The screen parted to reveal the couple and a registrar waiting to get the nuptials underway.

Laura, who turns 30 on Friday , said: ?Most brides can?t wait to tell everyone about their engagement and wedding plans, but I had to keep everything quiet.

?It was very difficult, but the reaction from our family and friends was priceless.

?It made it a wedding to remember for everyone.?

Matt and Laura, from Bollington, Cheshire,? were childhood sweethearts who were reunited two years ago.

The idea for the surprise wedding was hatched on Valentine?s Day.

Graphic designer Matt, who was 30 in January, said: ?We wanted to have a 30th birthday party for Laura and had talked about getting married, so I came up with the idea of combining the two.

?We have both been married before so didn?t want a big fuss and build-up.

?She was well up for the idea.?

Matt?s best man Colin Taylor and bridesmaid Jenny Evans were? sworn to secrecy, alongside their parents, Marshall and Karen Beresford and Michael and Elaine Hatton.

Disaster almost struck when the registrar arrived at the same time as some of the guests but staff at the Tytherington Club, Macclesfield, swept her away.

Laura, a PA at drugs firm AstraZeneca, said: ?On the day it was like a military operation rather than a wedding.

?When the partition went back revealing us I was sick with nerves and excitement. People were screaming, cheering and crying with joy.

?Even the registrar gave me a massive hug.?

The birthday party was then transformed into a wedding reception with a cake, buffet and disco.

The couple?s honeymoon will be a family holiday in October with their eight-month-old son George, and Halle, eight, Matt?s daughter from a previous relationship.

But China christened the city not to start a fight, just to let the other countries know to respect its claims to the ocean packed with fish, privy to half the world?s commercial shipping traffic and home to vast undersea oil reserves. China looks to those resources as its economy grows and its 1.35 billion people get wealthier.

?Beijing?s strategy is to do more, say less,? says Raymond Wu, managing director of Taipei-based political risk consultancy e-telligence. ?But it wants to send a number of messages. It wants to build the city to assert that it holds the rights to those islands.?

Economic conditions in Europe have been blamed for weak quarterly results or outlook at several tech companies. ? July 9: Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. says it's lowering its guidance because of weaker-than-expected sales in China and Europe and lackluster demand overall from consumers.

July 11: Gartner and IDC issue separate reports showing that personal computer sales sagged during the spring as shifting technology trends, upcoming product releases and a shaky economy dampened demand for the machines currently on the market. The second-quarter decline in the U.S. ranged from 6 percent to 11 percent compared with the same time last year. Worldwide PC shipments held up better during the quarter, dipping by just 0.1 percent from last year.

? July 12: Printer maker Lexmark International Inc. says it fared worse during the second quarter than management anticipated, providing the latest evidence of a weakening economy.

? July 17: Intel Corp., the world's largest chipmaker, says the weak global economy is slowing its growth, and revenue for the current quarter is likely to come in below Wall Street forecasts. Intel says consumer demand in North America and Western Europe is not recovering as fast as expected, while growth in emerging markets such as China and Brazil is slowing.

? July 18: IBM Corp. says its quarterly earnings rose 6 percent despite a 3 percent decline in revenue amid Europe's economic jitters. IBM has been able to boost its earnings even when revenue is weak by focusing more on businesses with higher profitability ? software and technology services ? rather than machines. Software was the only part of IBM's business that didn't register a decline from last year, with revenue remaining level. The turmoil in Europe hurt IBM's results as currencies there weakened, translating into fewer U.S. dollars.

Qualcomm Inc. says it had higher profit and revenue in the latest quarter, but it offers a weaker forecast for the current quarter because of supply issues. The company previously disclosed it has some limitations in getting chips made in the right size by outside suppliers. The mobile phone chip company insisted demand for its products remains high and earnings will improve by the end of 2012.

? July 19: Microsoft Corp. says a flat market for personal computers put a damper on Windows sales, though sales of business software and servers were strong. Investors are now looking to the Oct. 26 release of Windows 8, which could boost sales and help Microsoft mount a challenge to Apple's iPad, as the new operating software is designed for touch-based computers as well as traditional, mouse-controlled ones. Microsoft says it expects Windows revenue to remain roughly in line with the PC market, which is expected to stay flat through the current quarter.
