For the deaf or hearing impaired, the world can seem like a silent and isolated place. But, thanks to recent medical advances, the professionals at a hearing center are able to correct many problems related to the ear. Whether they have physical deformities of the ear or problems with the pathways that lead to the brain, many people are able to regain full or partial hearing. Much of this is the effect of hearing aids. There are many different types of hearing aids available on today's market. An audiologist works with his or her patients to determine which are best suited for them. When it comes to these devices, there are three main styles that an audiologist can recommend.

The first style is in-the-canal. This special type of aid is the least visible of all hearing aids. With this style there are two types: completely-in-the-canal or partially-in-the-canal. The aid is inserted into the ear canal (completely or partially, depending upon which type is purchased). It is able to sit directly in in front of the eardrum, amplifying the sounds that are carried to it. This style works best for individuals who only have mild hearing loss. Because of this, it is perfect for the gradual loss of hearing that seems to come along with aging.

In-the-ear styles are slightly different than in-the-canal. While there are many different types of these, each improving different volume and frequency levels, they each contain similar qualities. They fit into the outer ear (the round, concave part that is visible to the naked eye). This does make them more visible than in-the-canal models. However, due to their larger size and easy access, they are much easier to take in and out. These work best for individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Depending upon the patient's hairstyle, behind-the-ear aids are usually the most visible. This style has two main types: regular sized and mini. There are two parts to them: a control which fits behind the ear with a tube that runs into the ear and a receiver that is placed inside the ear. They work well for people in various degrees of hearing loss, but the audiologists in a hearing center usually recommend these for younger children who have been diagnosed with a hearing impairment. The section that fits into the ear fits many different ear types, making it an ideal choice for children, whose ears will most likely change in size and shape as they age. These also seem to be sturdier than other hearing aids, which is great for children who are active in sports or just love to play roughly.

While everyone may have their own style preferences, the audiologist will work with these patients individually to determine which one best suits their hearing needs. When an individual turns to a hearing center for help, it ensures that they have the best possible staff working with them to improve their hearing and their lives.
